Reno Sunrise sponsored and hosted five Polish first responders for a two week vocational visit to Reno, May 17 - 23, 2004.  The members of the team were:
Przemek Paciorek, MD, Ph.D., Professor of Emergency Medicine,  Team Leader
Janusz Halak, Battalion Chief, Inowroclaw Fire Department
Marek Lampka, Paramedic, Inowroclaw Regional Hospital
Aleksander Zalewski, MD, Inowroclaw Regional Hospital
Aleksandra "Ola" Zelanza, Paramedic Student, Inowroclaw Regional Hospital

The goal of the visit was to learn how emergency medical services function in the United States.  Their visit was funded by the Rotary Club of Inowroclaw (the Twin Club of Reno Sunrise), and the Polish American Foundation in Chicago. Sunrise Rotarian Martha Greene, organized the program, which is part of a continuing program with the Inowrocław Regional Hospital.   During their visit team members were able to visit and experience several areas of emergency medical services, experience the Nevada desert, be interviewed by the Reno Gazette-Journal, eat American food, and shop.

They made vocational visits to:

  • REMSA - The team spent three days with REMSA including riding with paramedic ambulances, touring Washoe Medical Emergency Room, Care Flight, and the REMSA facility.
  • Reno Fire Dept - Janusz toured RFD Headquarters and joined Engine 1 and Truck 1 for a 4 hour high-rise forced entry training.  He also spend a day riding with Rescue 3, responding to a rollover with 6 injuries.
  • Lovelock Volunteer Fire Department - The team visited the Lovelock Volunteer Fire (LVFD) Department and learned about an all volunteer first responder department, and the challenges of delivering services to a rural community.  LVFD gave the ream a tour of the Rochester open pit mine, and hosted them for a BBQ dinner
  • Washoe County Sheriff's Office  (WCSO )- The team toured the Regional Public Safety Training Facility, the Regional Communications Center, the Regional Emergency Operations Center, and the Jail.
