In 1999 Reno Sunrise Rotarian Martha Greene led a Rotary International Group Study Exchange (GSE) team to Poland. After returning from Poland she read  that  many of the eastern European countries do not have modern ultrasound equipment. Because of this, by the time cancer is detected it is often too late to save the patient.  Martha emailed Tomek Jezierski, a Rotarian who is a medical doctor.  He replied that this is true in Poland.  Martha then suggested that she and Tomek's Rotary Club (Rotary Club of Inowrocław) join together and apply for a Rotary Foundation Matching Grant to provide  state of the art ultrasound equipment to the regional hospital in Inowrocław, Publiczny Specalistyceny Zakkad Opieki Zdrowoinej (PS ZOZ).   In November of 2001 the Matching Grant was funded in the amount of US$40,000.

The city of Inowrocław has a population of approximately 70,000, and the regional hospital serves a population of just over 175,000, many of whom are referred from local clinics and hospitals.

Martha and her Rotarian partner Jon, spent two weeks in Poland, January 13 - 25, 2002.  The purpose of the trip was to join Polish Rotarians  to celebrate the completion of the Rotary Foundation Matching Grant.  Unfortunately, there was a delay in transferring the funds from Rotary International to Poland.  Because of this delay, the ultrasound equipment was not delivered to the hospital until early March, instead of the original scheduled date of mid January.

In the first 9 months of operation, just over 4100 patients were diagnosed using the ultrasound equipment.
